Solar Frontier CIS solar modules used to test power generation capability in harsh weather conditions of Niigata
Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K. today held an opening ceremony at its Niigata Yukigunigata Megasolar power plant in Niigata Prefecture attended by the governor of Niigata Prefecture and the mayor of Niigata City. The power plant is part of a subsidized project by the Prefecture and supported by the New Energy Promotion Council.
The power plant represents the first commercial megawatt-scale solar power plant in Japan. It has been constructed at Showa Shell Sekiyu's old Niigata Petroleum Terminal site, and has power generating capacity of 1,000 kilowatts, all of which will be sold through Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. to neighboring residents. There will also be exhibitions and educational sessions for local children to learn about future energies at the site.
The CIS solar modules installed at the power plant are supplied by Solar Frontier K.K., a 100% subsidiary of Showa Shell Sekiyu. Solar Frontier will test the power generating capability of its CIS solar modules under the severe weather conditions of Niigata including cold, snowy winters.

About Solar Frontier K.K.
Solar Frontier K.K., a 100% subsidiary of Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K., is committed to creating the most economical, ecological solar energy solutions in the world, on the world's largest scale. Solar Frontier's proprietary CIS technology, denoting key ingredients Copper, Indium, and Selenium, has the best overall potential to set the world's most enduring standard for solar energy. This is based on our legacy of work in solar technology since the 1970s, the priority focus our laboratories have given to CIS since 1993, and our success in large scale CIS commercialization since 2007. The critical factors that combine to make CIS the overall economical and ecological leader include high efficiency and low production costs as well as superior reliability, stability, sustainability, non-toxicity, and lower overall energy consumption in the manufacturing process to yield a faster energy payback time. That is why in 2009 we announced plans for a 900MW factory in Miyazaki, Japan. Scheduled to commence operations in 2011, it will become the world's largest photovoltaic production facility, enabling Solar Frontier to meet worldwide demand for the new standard in affordable solar panel performance.
